Creation of a Caricature Robot, a Multimedia Approach for Robots at Home

Classic animation has brought during the years memorable characters to our daily lives. It has also brought unanimated objects to life, like toasters, lamps, chandeliers and more. This has inspired a new approach into robot creation and motion design, by proposing a new category in robotics for the creation of what we denominated caricature robots. These robots count with three characteristic elements that should be presented in them, functionality, simplicity and personality. The functionality of caricature robots could help them to be included in homes. Their element of simplicity defines these robots design, keeping them with minimal amount of degrees of freedom. The personality of a caricature robot is defined by the creation of e-motions, through the implementation of the BEAR methodology that takes the principles of classic animation into the robotic motion design. To illustrate the above, the Music Mouth, WOBOT and Junior robot projects are described and explained to exemplify the creation and application of caricature robots in different scenarios.
